Ingredients
2 pie crusts (store-bought or homemade)
6 large apples, peeled and sliced
3/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
2 tablespoons cornstarch
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon butter, cut into small pieces
1 egg (for egg wash)
Instructions
-
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Roll out one pie crust and place it in a 9×13-inch baking dish.
-
In a large bowl, combine the apples, sugar, brown sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, cornstarch, and salt. Mix until the apples are well coated.
-
Pour the apple mixture into the pie crust, spreading it out evenly. Dot the filling with small pieces of butter.
-
Roll out the second pie crust and place it over the apple filling. Trim any excess dough and crimp the edges to seal the pie.
-
Brush the top of the pie with the egg wash, then use a knife to make a few slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape.
-
Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.
-
Allow the pie to cool before serving.
Notes
-
Add a Streusel Topping: For an extra crunchy topping, sprinkle a simple streusel (made with butter, flour, and sugar) on top before baking.
-
Use Different Apples: For a more complex flavor profile, mix tart apples like Granny Smith with sweet apples such as Fuji or Honeycrisp.
-
Caramel Sauce: Drizzle warm caramel sauce over the pie before serving for added richness.
-
Spiced Twist: Add a pinch of ground ginger or allspice to the filling for extra warmth and depth of flavor.
