Ingredients
For the Salisbury Steak:
- 4 tablespoons vegetable oil, divided
- 1 onion, finely diced
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 lb ground beef (80% lean)
- 1/3 cup panko breadcrumbs
- 1 large egg
- 1/3 cup marinara sauce
- 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
For the Gravy:
- 1 onion, finely diced
- 1 cup sliced mushrooms
- 2 cups beef stock
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 3 tablespoons cornstarch mixed with ¼ cup beef stock (or water)
Instructions
- Prepare the Patties: In a pan, heat 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil over medium heat. Sauté the onion and garlic for 2-3 minutes, then let cool. Combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, marinara sauce, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and sautéed onion-garlic mixture in a bowl. Mix until just combined and form 4-5 patties.
- Sear the Patties: Heat the remaining 2 tablespoons of oil in a pan and sear the patties for about 1 minute per side, then set aside.
- Make the Gravy: In the same pan, sauté the remaining onion for 5 minutes. Add the mushrooms and cook until golden brown.
- Combine and Simmer: Add beef stock, Worcestershire sauce, and the steaks back to the pan. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Simmer for 15 minutes.
- Thicken the Gravy: Stir in the cornstarch mixture and cook for 5 more minutes until the gravy thickens. Serve the steaks with the gravy.
Notes
- Add Vegetables: Add carrots, peas, or green beans to the gravy for extra flavor.
- Spicy Salisbury Steak: Add cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes to the beef mixture or gravy for a spicy kick.
- Mushroom-Free: If you prefer, substitute mushrooms with onions or bell peppers.
