Ingredients

For the Salisbury Steak:

  • 4 tablespoons vegetable oil, divided
  • 1 onion, finely diced
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 lb ground beef (80% lean)
  • 1/3 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/3 cup marinara sauce
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

For the Gravy:

  • 1 onion, finely diced
  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms
  • 2 cups beef stock
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch mixed with ¼ cup beef stock (or water)

Instructions

  • Prepare the Patties: In a pan, heat 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil over medium heat. Sauté the onion and garlic for 2-3 minutes, then let cool. Combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, marinara sauce, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and sautéed onion-garlic mixture in a bowl. Mix until just combined and form 4-5 patties.
  • Sear the Patties: Heat the remaining 2 tablespoons of oil in a pan and sear the patties for about 1 minute per side, then set aside.
  • Make the Gravy: In the same pan, sauté the remaining onion for 5 minutes. Add the mushrooms and cook until golden brown.
  • Combine and Simmer: Add beef stock, Worcestershire sauce, and the steaks back to the pan. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Simmer for 15 minutes.
  • Thicken the Gravy: Stir in the cornstarch mixture and cook for 5 more minutes until the gravy thickens. Serve the steaks with the gravy.

Notes

  • Add Vegetables: Add carrots, peas, or green beans to the gravy for extra flavor.
  • Spicy Salisbury Steak: Add cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes to the beef mixture or gravy for a spicy kick.
  • Mushroom-Free: If you prefer, substitute mushrooms with onions or bell peppers.
