Ingredients
2 tablespoons butter
1 large onion, thinly sliced
1 loaf sourdough bread
1 cup gouda cheese, shredded
Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
-
Melt the butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions are caramelized, about 15 minutes.
-
While the onions are caramelizing, slice the sourdough bread and lightly toast the slices.
-
Once the bread is toasted, top each slice with a generous portion of caramelized onions and shredded gouda cheese.
-
Place the bread in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) and bake for 5-10 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
-
Serve warm and enjoy!
Notes
-
Herbs: Add fresh thyme or rosemary to the caramelized onions for extra flavor.
-
Cheese Alternatives: Swap gouda with mozzarella, cheddar, or brie for a different flavor profile.
-
Balsamic Glaze: For a tangy-sweet twist, drizzle balsamic glaze over the onions before adding the cheese.
-
Garlic Bread Twist: Rub a sliced garlic clove on the toasted sourdough for added flavor depth.
