Ingredients
- 2.5 to 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup warm water
- 1 tablespoon olive oil (or vegetable oil)
- 1 tablespoon white granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1 egg, beaten (for brushing)
Instructions
1. Activate the Yeast:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast.
- Stir gently and let sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
2. Add Wet Ingredients:
- Add olive oil to the yeast mixture and stir to combine.
3. Incorporate Dry Ingredients:
- Gradually add 2.5 cups of flour and salt to the wet mixture.
- Stir until a soft dough forms. If too sticky, add more flour, a little at a time.
4. Knead the Dough:
- Transfer dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
5. First Rise:
- Place dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean cloth, and let it rise for 1 hour (until doubled).
6. Shape the Loaf:
- Punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf by rolling it into a rectangle and tightly rolling it up.
7. Second Rise:
- Place the shaped loaf on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Cover loosely and let rise for 30 minutes.
8. Preheat Oven:
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
9. Prepare for Baking:
- Brush the top of the loaf with the beaten egg for a shiny finish.
- Optionally, make diagonal slashes on top for a classic look.
10. Bake the Bread:
- Place the loaf in the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown and hollow when tapped.
11. Cool:
- Remove from oven and let the bread cool on a wire rack before slicing.
